Debut Authors To Check Out in 2024!
A comprehensive (but not complete) list of debut authors to keep an eye out for this year...
We made it folks - it’s August and I’m overwhelmed with the incredible debuts I’ve already read this year! Here is a list of debut authors I am incredibly excited to read or have read their debuts and want to shout it from the rooftops. I’m mostly keeping this list limited to fantasy and fantasy-romance authors but I cover both traditionally-published and self-publishing authors.
This list will mostly cover authors that have books coming out in the second half of the year or have had their debut come out recently. I’ve read majority of the books on this list and I’m incredibly excited to read the ones I haven’t <3
Jennifer Delaney - Tales of a Monstrous Heart
Starting off the list is Jennifer Delaney! Jennifer’s debut, Tales of a Monstrous Heart, will be released by Gollancz in August this year and this is absolutely a new release you need to keep an eye out for.
I was lucky enough to be sent an ARC and it was, quite honestly, one of the best books I’ve read so far this year. I don’t venture into dark academia too often, but with the promise of a moody, reclusive Lord and an intelligent, witty Fae, I knew this was one I needed to get my hands on early. This is a romantic fantasy that is sure to leave you gasping for air with plot twists, epic reveals and a swoon-worthy love interest (Emrys Blackthorn you have my heart)!
Tigest Grima - Immortal Dark
This is my first (but not last!) entry of an Aussie-based author making their debut this year. Tigest is an Ethiopian author living in Melbourne, Australia and her debut novel, Immortal Dark, will be released this September with Hachette AUS!
I finished my ARC of Immortal Dark over the weekend and I’m still thinking about this incredibly rich story. With black vampires and a dark academia setting, this title needs your full attention. I knew this was going to be one of my favourite reads of 2024 and I was absolutely correct - Kidan is such a complex character and her chemistry with equally nuanced MMC Susenyos is delicious… whilst Immortal Dark is considered upper YA, there is a bit of a hot and heavy scene that I think about daily!
R. Moody - Null & Void
For the first self-published author to the list, we have R. Moody! Rae is another Aussie-based author with her debut coming out in August and I am beyond excited for this one. It is a dark fantasy romance with elements of found family, female rage and diverse representation, this is easily one of my most anticipated reads for this month! Null & Void is out August 15th and I am SO excited to start reading!
Braidee Otto - Songbird of the Sorrows
Braidee is another self-published debut author who has actually JUST released her debut Songbird of the Sorrows in June! I was lucky enough to be an ARC reader for this one and I was quite literally blown away. It’s not often that a world or plot feels entirely unique but this one sure did.
The world-building was so well -done, it felt almost effortless. I could never guess the direction of the story and the cliffhanger for this one has stuck with me ever since. If you haven’t already, I implore you to download it right now! Braidee as also just announced that she is represented by a literary agency so I see great things in her future…
Another installment…
is already in the works! I plan to make several parts to this list, so if there are any authors you’d like to be featured or think I should check out, please comment!
As always, thank you for reading xx
